     ATV: Arapeen OHV Trail System

The Arapeen OHV Trail System is located in south central Utah in the Manti-La Sal National Forest. Over 350 miles of ATV and 4X4 routes are included in the system. The backbone of the system is the scenic South Skyline Drive which is a rugged 4X4 experience for most of its 58-mile length from Utah Highway 31 on the north to the Fish lake National Forest boundary on the south. Access to the western side of the trail system occurs from Sanpete Valley and US Highway 89. Principal access points include 4X4 route #4 in Spring City Canyon, ATV route #3 in Manti Canyon, and ATV route #2 in Twelve Mile Canyon east of Mayfield. Access to the eastern side occurs from the communities of Castle Dale and Ferron which are located along Utah Highway 10. Principal access points include ATV route #5 west of Joes Valley Reservoir, ATV route #62 from Ferron Canyon, and 4X4 route #7 also located in Ferron Canyon.

            Snow Mobiling

The plateau above Fairview, Manti and Mayfield (Twelve Mile) canyons [complex map], provides excellent snowmobiling from November to April, and connects with Joe’s Valley/Ferron. This area also connects to Skyline Drive. It is just south of the larger more popular areas, and has opportunities rising above 10,000 feet.
The Utah Division of Parks and Recreation, in cooperation with the Manti LaSal National Forest Service, grooms more than 100 miles of trails.

This central Utah complex is located away from major population centers. Its varied terrain makes it the perfect get-away-from-it-all retreat. Follow a groomed trail or glide through an open field of fresh powder – the opportunities are limitless.
Check with local U.S. Forest Service offices for trail guides and travel maps for ungroomed trails and other areas open to snowmobile use.

Ephraim Canyon

Nearby Ephraim Canyon is a beautiful escape into the mountains that overlook the peaceful Sanpete Valley. A half-hour drive up the canyon will bring you to the Skyline Drive. Numerous trails twist through the areas which are suitable for mountain biking, horseback riding and 4-wheeling. The area also offers excellent snowmobiling in the winter.

          Maple Canyon

Maple canyon is quite an amazing place to go rock climbing. At first it doesn’t appear to be that great of a place to climb and it is hard to imagine that this desert place could be such a climbing Mecca. Many people have said that they don’t trust the rock or the protection provided in this canyon. But I assure you that the holds are there and the climbing is excellent. Be sure to bring a helmet for the belayer because routes less traveled tend to have more rock fall. Belaying your climbing partner from an angle that will protect you is recommended.

Hunting/Fishing

Fishing and hunting are among the most popular sports in Sanpete County. Nature has graced this area with streams and lakes well-stocked with rainbow trout and other fish. Those who do not enjoy fishing, look forward to hunting season and the chance to head for the mountains and forests where deer and elk abound. Occasional bear and mountain lions make exciting trophies. Geese and duck are plentiful across the marsh lands of the County. Inhabiting the valley floor are thousands of pheasants.

          Skyline Drive

One of many attractions the Manti-LaSal National Forest has to offer is the beautiful drive across the Skyline Drive. Many visitors each year come to the Manti-LaSal National Forest to view the beautiful scenery from Skyline Drive. The Skyline Drive corridor contains portions of the Utah Adventure Highway and the Great Western Trail. It provides panoramic views and is one of the most scenic drives in the Nation.
Skyline Drive (graded), for its length is one of the highest roads in the United States, winds for nearly 100 miles along the broad summit of the Wasatch Plateau, affording magnificent views of Sanpete Valley, mile-deep canyons, lake-filled basins and delightful alpine meadows and forests
